Why Does My Drain Keep Clogging? What a Repeat Backup Really Means

A drain that clogs again within weeks was cleared, not fixed. A cable machine can punch a hole through a grease ring or root ball. That leaves most of the buildup on the pipe wall. A repeat clog usually means the pipe itself is holding waste back. A camera is the only honest way to see it.

Below is the real difference between clearing a drain and fixing it. You will also see when a camera earns its money. And you will see two Los Angeles reasons a line keeps backing up that a store bought drain cleaner will never touch.

Why does my drain keep clogging after I clear it?

A cable machine can punch a hole through a grease ring or a root ball and get water flowing again. That is fine for a one time clog. It is not the same as removing the problem. Most of what was blocking the pipe stays behind on the wall, just pushed aside enough to let water through.

If the same drain backs up again a few weeks or months later, that leftover buildup is still there. So is whatever caused it. On the second call, our drain and sewer cleaning service does more than clear the line again. We find out why it keeps happening. Ask us for a free estimate and we can tell you which one it is, before you pay to clear the same line a third time.

What's the real difference between clearing a drain and fixing it?

Clearing restores flow. Fixing removes the cause. A cable clears. A full hydro jetting run sprays water backward at high pressure. That scrubs the whole pipe wall as it travels, and removes far more of what is coating it. But neither one repairs a broken pipe. Pressure and cutting only work on what is inside the pipe. They cannot fix the pipe itself.

Hardened kitchen grease is the clearest everyday example. Los Angeles County Public Works says fats, oils and grease build up inside sewer lines. That buildup restricts the flow until the line blocks. Its guidance tells homeowners not to grind food scraps down the garbage disposal, for that exact reason. Once grease has hardened onto a kitchen line, it is a coating on the wall. It is not a plug in the middle. A cable leaves most of that coating behind. Only scrubbing the wall, which is what jetting does, actually takes it off.

When should a camera go down the line instead of clearing it again?

On a second blockage in the same year. That is the point where clearing it again stops being the honest answer. A camera earns its cost right there. The camera shows roots growing in at a joint. It shows a low spot holding standing water, a cracked section, or a belly where the pipe has settled. It can also show a line that is simply dirty and otherwise fine.

That picture is what decides whether you are paying for another cleaning or a repair. We would rather show you the footage than guess, and a camera run typically adds about 30 minutes to a standard visit.

Could ground movement be causing repeat clogs in Los Angeles?

For an older San Fernando Valley home, yes. It is a cause most drain cleaner ads never mention. The 1994 Northridge earthquake was a magnitude 6.7 event. It struck about a mile from Northridge and roughly 11 miles underground. It produced some of the strongest ground shaking ever recorded in a North American city.

Cast iron and clay drain lines do not flex. On a house built before 1994, that kind of ground movement can offset a joint just enough to catch waste and roots. It does not have to crack the pipe outright to do it. That is a different problem from a grease clog or a root ball, and it needs a different fix. This is a real concern across how we work in Northridge, where a large share of the housing stock predates the quake. It holds true anywhere else in the valley with pipe that old. If a repeat clog is on an older line, and nothing about the household's habits has changed, ask us to rule out an offset joint with a camera before the line gets cleared again.

Age of the pipe matters on its own too, earthquake aside. In our Woodland Hills service area, 63.6 percent of homes were built before 1980. The older that clay or cast iron lateral is, the more likely a repeat clog is the pipe itself, not a one time blockage.

Am I responsible for the sewer line under my yard and parkway?

Yes, all the way out to the city main. A long standing City of Los Angeles policy is administered under Municipal Code 64.12. It puts the house connection lateral on the property owner, from the property line out to the mainline sewer. It also states that a lateral blocked by tree roots is the owner's responsibility. That is true whether the roots are on private property or under the public parkway.

That matters for a repeat clog. Homeowners often assume the section under the sidewalk or street is the city's problem. It is not. City sewer connections also have to meet a two percent minimum slope, under Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering standards. A lateral that has settled below that slope will keep collecting solids. That happens no matter how many times it gets cleared. The pipe itself, not the debris in it, is why the water will not drain downhill fast enough.

What happens if the camera shows the pipe itself is the problem?

We say so. Then we walk you through the repair options in plain language, with no pressure to buy a cleaning that will not hold. A collapsed section, a joint that has pulled apart, or a settled lateral will keep collecting waste. That happens no matter how often it is cleared. At that point another cleaning is a rental, not a fix.

Here is what that repair path runs, in 2026 national market data, so you know the general shape of the number before anything is decided.

Item 2026 market range Source
Sewer camera inspection $200 to $1,300 or more HomeAdvisor, June 2026
Spot repair (cracked or settled section) $1,000 to $4,000 HomeAdvisor, June 2026
Full sewer line replacement $3,000 to $25,000 HomeAdvisor, June 2026

Those are ranges, not a bill. What a specific line actually needs depends on what the camera finds, which is why we look first.

Why is my drain still blocked even after using a drain cleaner?

A store bought drain cleaner works a lot like a cable. It can open a channel through soft buildup so water moves again. But it does not remove what is stuck to the pipe wall. It cannot reach a root ball, a low spot holding water, or a joint that has come apart. If the drain is still slow after a cleaner, the cause is usually further down the line than the cleaner can travel. That is exactly what a camera inspection is for.

What's the strongest thing to unclog a drain?

For a stubborn or repeat clog, a hydro jetter beats a cable or a store bought cleaner. It sprays water backward at high pressure. That pulls the hose along the pipe and scrubs the whole wall clean, instead of just punching a channel through the middle. We run a camera first on any older line, to confirm it can take that pressure before we use one. You can read more about how that works on our hydro jetting page.

Does Dawn dish soap really unclog a drain?

It can help with a small, fresh grease clog. Hot water and dish soap can loosen soap scum or grease that has not fully hardened yet. It will not cut through grease that has already hardened onto the pipe wall. It does nothing for roots or a settled section of pipe. Los Angeles County's own guidance on kitchen grease says the buildup restricts flow until the line blocks. Once it has hardened, only scrubbing the wall clears it for good.
